Hot Cross Buns are common over the Easter period. The warm flavors will have you wanting more and more. Here we have a very delicious raisin and chocolate chip hot cross bun. You can definitely do away with the raisins but I love raisins so I decided to add them. You certainly put your own twist.

Ingredients

  • Milk

  • Yeast

  • Sugar

  • Butter

  • Vanilla essence

  • Eggs

  • Salt

  • Cinnamon

  • Flour

  • Raisins

  • Chocolate chips

  • Nutmeg

Measurements

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • 2 and 1/4 tspn yeast

  • 1 tspn sugar

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 80g

  • 1/2 tspn vanilla

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon

  • 1 Tbsp nutmeg

  • 3 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup raisins

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Cross on top of the bun.

  • 1/2 cup (60g) all-purpose flour or bread flour

  • 90-120ml water

  • 1/3 cup icing sugar

  • 2-3 Tbsp milk

Cooking and preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 190•c

  2. In a small bowl, add warm milk, 1 Tbsp sugar and yeast. Whisk, cover with a tea towel and set aside.

  3. In a larger bowl add; flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, butter and eggs. Mix everything together. It’s easier to start with 1 cup of flour at a time.

  4. Add your yeast mixture.

  5. Mix everything together and a nice dough should form.

  6. Add in your raisins and chocolate chips and knead your dough.

  7. Knead your dough by hand for about 2 minutes.

  8. Transfer the kneaded dough to a lightly greased bowl.

  9. Cover the dough with a tea towel and leave to rise in a warm area for about 90 minutes. Or until the dough doubles in size.

  10. Once your dough rises, punch it down to release the air.

  11. Knead for a few seconds and divide the dough into 10 pieces.

  12. Shape them into round balls and place them on a greased baking pan and leave to rise for another hour.

  13. Once they have doubled, pipe your cross on top of the bun.

  14. To make the cross whisk your flour and water. Make sure it’s thick enough to pipe.

  15. Bake for 25 minutes.

  16. Once the cross buns have baked and cooled down, mix your milk and icing sugar to make your icing. Pipe your icing following the cross shape.

Serve and enjoy!
